Climate Services

Solterra Solutions provides Climate Services under two main areas.

  1. Risk management through climate change adaptation.
  2. Climate change mitigation through greenhouse gas reduction.

Risk management through climate change adaptation

Scientific understanding of the potential future impacts of climate change has increased dramatically in recent years. These impacts include, but are not limited to, changes in extreme temperatures and precipitation, drought severity and frequency, sea level and forest fire occurrence. Many businesses, communities and provinces have either developed or are in the process of developing climate change adaptation plans. A first step usually involves assessing the threat of climate change to the built, social and natural environment. Solterra Solutions can help in this regard.

For example, a particular local ecosystem might be intolerant to drought. An adaptation strategy would involve developing a way to sustain this ecosystem in a changing climate. A seaside tourist resort may be concerned about rising sea levels and coastal erosion. A logging community might worry about potential increases in pest outbreaks or forest fires. An insurer might be interested in reducing exposure and risk to claims associated with changes in extreme weather. A municipality might be concerned about its storm drain infrastructure in the face of increasing extreme precipitation. Climate adaptation plans are also extremely important in the design of new and maintenance of existing infrastructure that is expected to last for many decades.

Solterra Solutions assists clients by providing them with individually-designed climate products that allow for a quantitative risk assessment of their exposure to the impacts of climate change.

Our researchers collaborate closely with staff at the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium in British Columbia and the Ouranos Consortium in Québec.

Climate change mitigation through greenhouse gas reduction

Solutions required for reducing greenhouse gas emissions generally fall into two categories: technological and behavioral. The technological challenge ultimately involves transforming energy systems away from their dependence on greenhouse gas emitting fossil fuels. Renewable energy systems will play an integral part of this transition. The behavioural challenge involves facilitating individuals to claim ownership of their contribution to the problem, and hence empowering them to be part of the solution. In this regard, the recognition that our current pattern of consumption is unsustainable is key.

Solterra Solutions is able to assist clients with the development of policy and regulations designed to achieve effective and lasting reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. We further aid clients with the development of strategies for greenhouse gas management.

Solterra Solutions is presently partnering with The Carbon Solution in the development of innovative behavioural greenhouse gas reduction programs.
